Subject: [*] BigSound-10.hqx
BigSound 1.0
BigSound requires system 7.0 or later to run.
Lets you record, and play BIG sounds if you have a built in
microphone (ones longer than 10 seconds, depending on how much
memory/hd space you have).
You can drop any folder/file into it on the desktop and it'll
play any sounds it finds inside.
When it plays sounds, it plays them in the background so you can
use your mac to do other things while listening...
If you don't have a microphone on your mac, you can still use bigsound
to play sounds...
And, the usual... Although BigSound has a very robust error handling system
built in, and I believe BigSound to be free of bugs, you must use use
BigSound at your own risk, and you, yourself, take any responsibility
for any damages you may encur as a result of using BigSound.
BigSound is FreeWare!! Enjoy...

Apparently the copy of Financial Portfolio I submitted to IMD V11 #193 was
corrupted. Here it is again. Hopefully it will make it through alright this
time.........
This is a '.sea' file of a Hypercard based program for managing stock
portfolios and the like. I originally dowloaded it from AOL and have been
using it for over a year, now. I use it mainly for tracking stock
portfolios, but it has some other nice features as well. Liked it so much I
contacted the author for permission to post.
I am not the author, but am posting it for Michael Foreman. Information on
how to reach him is contained within the .sea. His posted description of
the program follows:
This is version 2.81 of the Financial Portfolio stack, which lets you keep
track of your accounts & investments and allows you to calculate your net
worth, capital gains, etc.
This program is "kidware": if you are thinking of using it, please send me
a dollar (or more, if you would like) and I will forward it to St. Jude's
Children's Research Hospital.

Subject: [*] Mac XDMCP Client
The X Display Manager Control Protocol (XDMCP) is a standard way for X
Servers to request login services from host computers. Mac X server
software, like Mac X and eXodus, have not included support for XDMCP. This
means that Mac users have had to go to extreme lengths to get Unix hosts
like HPs, Silicon Graphics, and Suns to present a login screen or to
configure a login environment that operates the same as a X Terminal or
console display.
Mac XDM addresses this problem by providing a separate application that
performs the XDMCP "handshake" with a X Windows host, requesting a login
session on behalf of the Mac X server.

Subject: [*] New version of MacHTTP, WWW Server for Macs
What is MacHTTP?
================
MacHTTP is a server for Macs participating in the World Wide Web (WWW). It
allows you to serve hypertext documents to other WWW users from your
Macintosh.
This version allows you to serve text documents (like HyperText Markup
Language
documents) as well as binary files (GIFs, f'rinstance). This server works with
the standard WWW clients as well as clients like XMosaic that support embedded
graphics and it supports HTTP version 0.
What's New?
===========
Lots of new stuff in this release! First, a big thanks goes to Chris Johnson
(chrisj@bongo.cc.utexas.edu) who provided a chunk of code for resolving
file aliases. That means that as of this version, you can have aliases in
place of every file with the exception of the log file and they will be
correctly interpreted.
Logging to a file has been implemented, capturing information on the date,
time, remote host, and requested file. Information on whether or not the
query was successfully performed is also logged. Logging is controlled
in the config file.
Specifications for the Default.html and Error.html files were added to the
configuration file, allowing you to specify any file for your home page
as well as error messages. These files can now be AppleScripts as well.
See the Special Files and Configuration File sections for more details.
Please read this document carefully. A lot of information has been
added and I probably haven't documented it very well.

Truss Analysis and Visualization is a program for the force analysis of planar

enable the use of this software on a B/W and color screen. (It needs Color

The program allows the user to
* Create a new truss design or use an existing preloaded truss.
* Alter the geometry of an existing truss design through moving the joint
locations
or by the addition/removal of truss members, truss supports or truss joints.
* Alter the loading on an existing truss.

I agree with the responses made here on this Digest by
Graham and Allan that this kind of material isn't suitable
for Info-mac Digest. I have seen the same issue tossed
around on another forum, and it seems to me that although
I consider it a tarnishing of a Gentleman's honor to post/print
this kind of stuff, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it
other than to make it understood that the readers consider
it unwelcome. I also agree that this very likely is only a
transient occurence on IMD, so I will just leave it at that.

Recently, I informed this readership that Apple Canada has dropped the LC520.
Thanks to melczer@sfu.ca and his source, I now have a clearer picture. Here,
I'm
told, are the words of Apple Canada dealer Bob Cotter:
>Not true... well, not all true...
>
>The LC520 has been dropped from the price list... not the product line...
>Apple has almost 2,000 of these on backorder in Canada alone and will not
take
>any more orders until supplies are available. I ordered 30 of the 8/160
units
>today which are scheduled to ship from Apple on the 22nd of November... and,
I
>expect to have a dozen of the same units available for sale next week.
Thanx for that clarification, folks.
The subtle distinction that escaped me in the original announcement is that
Apple Canada has dropped the LC520 from its _price list_, but not from its
_product lineup_. (Which means, I guess, that they haven't stopped selling
them;
you just can't buy one. Only in Canada, you say? ...Pity. ;-)
Anyway, my apologies if I created any panic.

The consensus was, and I quote:
It's because of device drivers. In the original Mac operating system, and up
through system 6, there was a single Macintosh operating system call, _Open,
that was used both to open files and to open device drivers. The way that the
_Open routine could tell
the difference was that device drivers started with a "." in the name.
Starting with System 7, there are now 2 routines, _Open and _OpenDF,the latter
of which will open the data fork of a file. So, any program that is truly
System
7 dependent can use files with names that begin with a ".", but Apple doesn't
recommend it, sinc
e lots of programs still use the old system call.
(You can get a list of these drivers by using "Tattletale" (at
Sumex: cfg/tattle-tale-163.hqx).

Subject: Connecting to EtherNet
I administer to a very small, very local, LocalTalk network consisting
of 4 SE/30Us, a Classic II, a Laserwriter IIf and a Canon L770 Fax
machine (using Shiva NetSerial). There is also available a Department-
wide EtherNet Network, from which our isolation will soon have to come
to an end.
As a start to ending this isolation, I am contemplating installing an
EtherNet card in the SE/30 (using the PDS slot, assuming that such cards
are readily available) sitting on my desk. While it is unlikely that
there will be much call initially, I am assuming that at least in
principle, all the other machines would also have access, using the
LocalTalk linkage, to the EtherNet backbone, though at degraded speeds.
Why am I not making a complete switch and moving everything on to
EtherNet? I am hoping to upgrade all our hardware in about eight or so
months, very likely to PowerPCUs, which I assume will be EtherNet-savvy
out of the box. With this timetable, and the limited initial demand, it
seems silly to throw away the investment in six or seven EtherNet
adaptors, etc.
More specifically then:
1. I would appreciate having those who have done something similar
share their experiences with me, especially the lessons learned and
counter-recommendations derived therefrom;
2. I am also seeking recommendations on EtherNet cards for the PDS
slot, for 10-Base-T wiring; and
3. I am also seeking any other interesting ideas on this subject.
Thank you in advance, and
Cheers.

Some digests ago I asked about how to format a RODIME harddisk which could
not be dealt with by Silverlining or by FWB Harddisk Toolkit. Now it seems
my problem is solved, anmd here's the story.
>From Roger Bates at LaCie, I received the following email message:
> It does not sound like you are going to the the to work with any of the

"Ralph.Martin@cm.cf.ac.uk" emailed me Rodime's driver utility. I could use
it to "test" the drive and lock out bad blocks, but it failed to work when
I selected the menu item "install" or "format & install". Using System 7.1
on a Centris 650, there was an error message with some numbers in it, and
since I do not have any manual or so, I could not interpret them. When
used on a MacPortable and with System 6.05 (booted from a floppy; it has
7.1 as well on the HD), it was simply a bomb which required a restart. But
it is not that bad - the rest could be done with FWB Harddisk Toolkit, and
now the drive appears to the Finder. I still have to install all the files
back to it, but I think this is not a problem.
I was disappointed to see that Silverlining (from LaCie, which I usually
take to format all my drives - not only those from LaCie) was still unable
to deal with that particular drive. It showed only half of the size
(someting over 70 mB) and always complained that something was wrong.
So it seems that this time, FWB's product is more useful - at least in
this special case - and that Rodime's own product is not behaving the
way it should.

Subject: More Frozen Finders
Similar to Jay Bienvenu, I have also been having some trouble w. my Finder,
but it goes back a ways, and I don't use the myriad extensions that he has.
The hardware: IIsi, 105 MB Quantum HD (w. 4 partitions), LocalTalk
connections,
The Software: 7.0.1 w. Tuneup (and 7.1, see following); AfterDark,
AutoDoubler, DiskDouble, CopyDoubler, Suitcase II, SoundManager Extension,
MenuChoice, FirstThingsFirst and some standard System 7 extensions, etc.
I noticed that in starting up the system, it took a LONG time to boot, with
an inordinate amount of disk action going on (this is long after stuff in
the StartUp folder is launched). All the disks are mounted, their open
windows displayed, etc., but although I can close individual windows, etc.
I can't get anything to happen
UNTIL after the disk stops chattering AND it looks like the Finder restarts
itself: the desktop is completely wiped, and the disks are remounted,
windows reopened, etc., although any windows that I had CLOSED before
during the previous phase of the startup are still OPEN (as if those
changes had not been saved).
Well, I went and installed 7.1, with the hardware upgrade 2.0. Now I get
the same amount of disk action at the launch, but NOW unstead of restarting
the FINDER everything HANGS. Usually nothing will respond, though
occasionally I can launch from Icons on the desktop (but NOT open a folder,
or a disk). The menubar in particular is unaccessable.
If I quit the finder (w. a Cmd-Opt-Esc sequence), I get a fresh copy of the
finder, (similar to what seem to happen 'automatically', though
mysteriously undier 7.0.1) and everything runs fine (until I shutdown, and
then the next day I have to go through the whole thing again).
As an experiment, I tried a Cmd-Opt_Esc earlier in the startup sequence
(after the StartUp folder stuff, during the heavy disk activity), I got a
dialog asking if I wanted to quit the "File Sharing Extension" (rather than
the Finder). So I took the File Shareing Extension out of the Extensions
folder and the hanging Finder problem went away. BUT I WANT FILE SHARING.
What do you do? What DO you do!?!

All CD-ROM drives are "readers". If you want to master (write) a
CD-ROM, you need a WORM (Write-Once Read-Many) drive. They go for
around USD 3,500.
The only negative thing about the CDR-25 is that it is ***SLOW***.

Uh oh, I think I'm about to display my DOS roots. Please forgive me!!
You may not need a DOS file concatenator. If you use a file splitter
that does not add anything in the spot where a file is split (ie, at the
end of the leading piece or the beginning of the trailing piece), then
you can use the standard DOS COPY command to join the segments.
The syntax is: COPY SEGMENT.1+SEGMENT2+...+SEGMENT.n JOINFILE
^------------------------------^
Note: NO spaces in this string! ---^
To the best of my knowledge, file splitters do not put headers or trailers
in the files that they split. So just give it a try with any file splitter
you may have. The worst that may happen is that it won't work....

I echo Andrew's feelings. The lack of new upload announcements really limits
getting to know what's new over there.

Might I suggest the setting up of a /.netrc file ? For example, I've an
entry in my netrc on our Unix box that goes:
machine sumex.aim.stanford.edu login anonymous password
courcoul@itesmcq1.qro..
et.cetera
This (somewhat unknown) feature of the Unix ftp command will get you in
without further intervention beyond the "ftp sumex.." command. The man page
has all the gory details... ;)

Ditto for that. Or why not dedicate one specific digest (say, the last one
sent out on Tuesdays, for example), to contain EXCLUSIVELY new upload
announcements for all the files added in the previous week ?

Subject: NuBus Serial Card from Apple
I hear that ARA 2.0 will be able to work with Apple's NuBus 4 port serial
card.
We were thinking of buying one for our server and attaching 4 Zyxel modems
to it for ARA access. Anyone have any experience with this card (apparently
no one in Germany even has a data sheet on this thing)?
Also, would anyone know if it could be used in the opposite direction? I.e.,
could someone on our net access one of the 4 modems to dial out to AppleLink?

Subject: Personal LaserWriter NTR Rev x?
I have a Personal LaserWrite NTR that I just bought from Falcon Systems for
work. When the startup page comes out in the lower right hand corner (and
running up the right hand side of the page) is some information about the
Postscript copyrights. On the second line of this information, after some
words about Apple logos etc., then is a Rev. 2.0. I also bought one of these
printers for home within a few days of the one at work. The startup page
for it says Rev 1.0. Any ideas about what the difference is?
I recently heard about the upgrade/fix for these printers that Apple will
do for free if you are having specific problems. I wonder if that
upgrade has been applied to the one that says Rev 2.0? Would applying
the upgrade to the one at home cause it to say Rev 2.0 ? Thanks for any
info you can offer.

Greetings, Net.folk!
Here's a query for your collective Mac expertise.
Anybody out there in .edu or .com land public relations had any
experience in sending anything beyond text files to print media?
Specifically, our university news office is wanting to know the
hardware and software requirements to transmit newspaper-quality
images (photos and occasional infographics) to newspapers and
Associated Press via modem. A conversation today with the graphics
department of a local paper turned up that they (and many others,
apparently) use a system called "A.P. Photolinks Pro" to exchange
photos both by telephone and over a private satellite network.
Beyond that, the fella wasn't real familiar with the process.
What do we need to get images _into_ our Mac network at
newspaper-quality level (we have an OmniPage scanner in service now
for in-house OCR text and non-critical graphic DTP work) and, probably
more importantly, what hardware/software do we need to be compatible
with the media at the other end of the twisted pair line? [Or is that
the twisted media at the other end of the telephone line? ;-)]
Please reply direct and I'll summarize for the group if warranted.
TIA!

Subject: Problems with Apple Remote Access
Dear info-mac readers:
We have a PowerBook 145 and Apple Remote Access. Also we have an
Apple Remote Access (ARA) network. On the ARA server we have a Smartmodem
Optima 2400. We have many users using the same modem for accessing the
ARA network. The owner of the PowerBook 145 use a Smartcome Optima modem
and can get through the network. But the person order an internal fax/modem
9600/2400, PSI PowerModem. He can send faxes and comunicate using a comuni-
cation software. But when we use ARA it's fails. Always report an error
type -5,920.
The strange think is if we use an external modem with the same Power-
Book works. We change the internal fax/modem, two times. But again the same
error.
Theres one piont, we have a Fax Line Manager (for split one thelephone
line for a fax and the modem). When we try without the Fax Line Manager
works.
Why.... theres any body expirience the same problem.
Thanks in advance....

No question that an "ibm list" would be a better place to post. However, I
know nothing about such lists. And, after reading info-mac for a year or
so, it's clear that many of your correspondents do have their feet in
multiple camps -- and many of you are university people, who seem more likely
to know about "bioreserve management" than the run of the mill folk that
hang around most newsgroups.
I suppose I could have phrased my question as "can anybody provide me a lead

I have two SCSI devices plugged into my Mac. Sometimes, I don't want to
have second one turned on. Is there a switch or something that I can put
in the line between the first and second device so, to accomplish what I
want, I don't have to unplug the second from the first and then terminate
the first. I would just like to be able to leave the second device off and
flick a switch to provide termination without undoing any cables. My first
device is a Asante Mini EN/SC ethernet box (with internal termination) and
it has a pass-thru SCSI cable, into which is plugged the cable for my
SyQuest drive (externally terminated). Any help in solving my problem is
GREATLY appreciated. :)

Subject: Sony 1730 vs. NEC 5FG monitors--comments please
Someone asked for advice about buying a monitor to use with a
Centris 650 for Photoshop work. She has it narrowed down to a
NEC 5FG 16" or a Sony Trinitron 1730 17".
She feels that the color is too green on the NEC but that it is sharper.
The Sony's color is better and of course is a little bigger. Aesthetically,
she likes the Sony better. If it were not for the better the sharpness of
the NEC, I'd say go with the SONY. Also, it is probable that the color of
the NEC can be corrected with the Gamma control panel that comes with
Photoshop.
Can anyone familiar with either the NEC 5FG 16" or the Sony 1730 17"
please comment or make suggestions? Thanks, Pete Tamas

I don't know, but...
In the dutch MacWorld there is a multiple choice test, in
which question 7 is (translated):
7. What is the non-official Macintosh system
version that was developed by hackers especially
to circumvent the use of System 7 on
certain Macintosh models?
a. System 6.2.0X
b. System 6.0.8L
c. System 6.9.9H
Now, I've never heard about anything like this. Anyone?
Maybe it's cheating asking for this information on the net
(my guess is "b"), but I'm really curious.

Subject: YAMMR (Yet Another Macwarehouse Modem Review)
Yes, ladies and gentlemen! This $99 modem from MacWarehouse (*) is indeed
a 14 400 baud modem with v42 bis compression and fax capability!
This modem is hereafter referred to as "TCI" (short for "TCI LineLink
14.4e").
You should know from the start that this modem seems to be Hayes-compatible
(i.e. it responded correctly to every AT command I threw at it...).
So, you ask:
> Well, what's the catch? Why do other vendors charge $299 and more for such
> a thing?
I don't know, but part of the answer might be: them other modems have more
little lights (such as a separate Send/Receive diode, which the TCI lacks).
Also, they might take a little less desk space (the TCI covers roughly
the area of a rotary phone, so I put mine on top and voila! Zero-footprint
modem :-). They come with more appropriate software (MAcKNOWLEDGE, for the
TCI, is awful) as well as faxing software.
However, the modem's capabilities are plenty: 14 400 bauds with compression,
so the transfers are done at approximately 1500-1600 bytes per second for
a typical file (i.e. compressed with Stuffit and binhexed). These files
contain few redundancies and are thus not compressed much by the v42bis
algorithm. Still, it's better than the theoretical maximum of 1440 bytes
per seconds, typical of a 14 400 baud modem.
Compare this with a theoretical max of 240 bps with a 2400 baud modem...
Also, a text file (e.g. "all-files.txt", from info-mac), transfers much
faster: 3500-3600 bps! Now that really flies! You can really see the
compression at work here.
All file transfers were made with ZTerm and the ZModem protocol, on a not-
too-noisy line.
And now, an added bonus: this modem can fax! Send and receive, though I was
not able to confirm if it was at 9 600 baud or 14 400 baud (I suspect the
latter). To do this, I simply used the fax software that came with my
trusty Zoom 24/96: QuickLink II Fax. It worked the first time: no setup,
no hassle.
So, indeed, I think this was a very good buy. I just hope it won't fail
right after the 90-days warranty!
Pros: Fast (14 400, v42bis), Fax send/receive (if you already have the
software)
Cons: limited warranty, a bit on the bulky side (but surprisingly light,
IMHO),
poor manual (doesn't even list the S-registers), poor software (you
have to get ZTerm or something), not all the lights you want (but then
again an internal modem has _no_ lights).
Keep on Mac'ing!
